Stories worth
staying for.

Sunset North Studios creates films and creative worlds that move between suspense, human connection, lived history, and humour. Our work spans thrillers, documentaries, drama, comedy, and music, with Northern Ontario at its heart.

We follow the story wherever it needs to go. The ambition is to make work that reaches beyond where it began—and stays with people long after it ends.

The 51 documentary poster: three generations of miners, a historic mine disaster and modern Timmins. Coming 2028.In development
ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARYCOMING 2028

The 51

Same ground. Different generations. A shared courage.

Every shift begins with someone leaving home. Every family waits for them to return.

On February 10, 1928, an underground fire at the Hollinger Mine in Timmins, Ontario, took the lives of 39 miners. Behind that number were people with plans for tomorrow, families whose lives changed forever, and a community left to carry their absence.

The 51 is a documentary in development that will move between that devastating day and the generations who followed: the people who still descend beneath the same northern ground, and the families whose lives are bound to the work. Through remembrance and the experiences of mining communities today, the film will explore inherited courage, the weight of loss, and the continuing responsibility to bring every worker home.

Planned for 2028, the disaster’s centenary, this is a story about what a town remembers, what it passes on, and the human lives behind the resources shaping our future.

The studio

Rooted in the North.
Built to go further.

Sunset North Studios is an independent Canadian film and creative studio based in Northern Ontario. We develop original films, documentaries, series, and music projects across genres, guided by a clear creative voice and a belief that powerful stories can begin anywhere.

Our slate moves from the tension of a thriller to the intimacy of a friendship, from the lives that shaped a mining community to the irreverence of small-town comedy. Each project has its own tone and world. What connects them is attention to character, atmosphere, and the feeling an audience takes away.

We combine writing, direction, editing, and sound with emerging production tools, including AI where it serves the work. The story sets the direction; the tools help bring it to the screen.

Small studio. Big dreams. That is a starting point. We are building a lasting body of work, one finished project at a time, with the determination to keep learning, keep making, and take the next story further. Our roots are here. Our ambition reaches well beyond them.

We welcome select creative collaborations and production partnerships with people who share that commitment to the work.

Bush Town

Bush Town highway sign logo, population not enough

Welcome to a northern Ontario town where the winters are long, the locals are blunt, and the news is rarely normal.

At BTTV News 6, cheerful anchor Glen and unimpressed weather lady Darlene deliver the town's latest chaos. Around them: miners, mechanics, hockey moms, questionable local businesses, and Steve the bear.

The series is currently in development. Production partnership enquiries are welcome.
